Sensuality, Spirituality & Indigenous Prayer Ceremonies

I appreciated GG’s tremendous meditation on sensuality and spirituality in yesterday’s DM alongside along with his commentaries on the e-book Tantric Jesus: The Erotic Coronary heart of Early Christianity. (I had forgotten I had written a Preface to it, truly.)

I’m reminded of the non-dualist perspective towards the physique, matter, and prayer that one encounters within the Native American custom. One motive I’ve felt so blessed by praying with indigenous individuals over time is that their prayer is as bodily as it’s. In a sweat lodge, one sweats—I imply, actually sweats.

My very first sweat lodge was led by a Chippewa chief at a big Tekakwitha Convention in Minnesota.

I entered the sweat lodge with my decrease again very a lot bothering me as a result of a critical automotive accident just a few years beforehand. I left the sweat lodge with my again feeling higher than it had for the reason that accident. In between, I had confronted dying (I felt) as my first response to the warmth of the lodge was to search for an exit–after which a hearth extinguisher. I might discover neither.  Then, lastly, I yielded to the expertise and was taken to a deeper place. All of the whereas, sweating profusely.

Years later, I took a widely known journalist who was researching an article about me for Rolling Stone to his first sweat lodge, and it was very extreme for him; he needed to lean on me to outlive the ordeal. However once I met his spouse a number of years later, she informed me that in her opinion, he was a modified man due to that sweat lodge expertise.

Sweat lodges dotted Oceti Sakowin campground on Standing Rock Reservation, ND, the place greater than 100 Native American nations and hundreds of worldwide supporters put their our bodies on the road in prayer and motion in 2016 to guard the water of the Oglala Aquifer and Missouri River from the Dakota Entry Pipeline. A sweat lodge is 180 levels completely different from most church buildings with their air-con in the summertime, warmth within the winter, roof within the rain or snow, and cushions on the kneelers. A lodge is just not that completely different from a Cosmic Mass (TCM), nonetheless, as a result of there we dance and infrequently sweat our prayers. As one Solar Dancer of 21 straight years of dancing mentioned to me following a TCM  on the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, “the TCM is your model of a sweat lodge. Every of them is split into 4 components” (cf. the 4 paths).

My imaginative and prescient quest, which I describe in some element in my autobiography, was each sensual and non secular, as has been each Solar Dance I’ve participated in.

Sure, in indigenous apply, you’re invited to deliver your physique to prayer; the sensual and non secular unite.

Jose Hobday, a Seneca lady and Franciscan sister, good friend and co-faculty member at our creation spirituality packages for over 20 years, launched us to a particular ceremony known as “Pelting with Flowers,” the place members throw flowers at each other, and after they fall to the ground, choose them up and throw them once more.

Sister José Hobday talks about residing life “to the hilt,” figuring out with Life and all its ups and downs. Then you definately have a good time by prayerful dancing! Grateful Dwelling

The ceremony is very efficient for honoring leaders by maintaining a few bushels in reserve and on the finish of the ceremony, shock the honored chief by dumping the hampers of flowers on her or him. The instructing was that we’re all right here to offer and obtain magnificence, however a pacesetter requires extra magnificence than anybody else with a purpose to lead properly. The smells, laughter, shock, and great thing about the flowers in that ceremony was itself a prayer of memorable sensuality.

Certainly, we honored our good friend and colleague M.C. Richards, who taught clay as meditation in our packages (doing clay as meditation could be very sensual, I guarantee you) on the event of the 25th anniversary of her iconic e-book, Centering: In Poetry, Pottery and the Particular person, with a Flower Pelting Ceremony. She was so moved that she composed a poem about it, which I’ll share in Monday’s DM.

To be continued.
