Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton and the Energy of Ritual

We now have been meditating on the story and individual of Dorothy Day this week. I used to be impressed to take action on listening to an interview final Saturday with Robert Ellsberg, creator of Dorothy Day: Religious Writings.

Dorothy Day—a journalist, memoirist, and founding father of The Catholic Employee—stays a beacon for justice and radical religion. Writing America: Pages & Individuals.

Dorothy appears particularly pertinent to our challenges right now since she was a Resister of the primary order. She had a deep inside life, which included every day Mass and every day prayer that ready her for her highly effective outer work on behalf of the anawim or forgotten ones.

She resisted nonviolently and bravely and paid the worth with many journeys to jail. She was additionally a dedicated pacifist.

She lived a lifetime of nice simplicity in and among the many poor, typically within the metropolis and typically within the countryside. She summarized her work as an effort to render it simpler for folks to be good. And completely satisfied.

She was near the Catholic monk Thomas Merton, as we mentioned in yesterday’s DM. We meditated there on their shared stand on behalf of Native Individuals, and on how Dorothy wrote a Foreword to Merton’s e book Ishi Means Man, by which he laments the genocide of indigenous peoples and holds up their rituals for his or her capability to attach us to the higher cosmos.

Merton criticized missionaries for failing to understand the great thing about Mayan rituals and painted an image of the “sleek, ritual dancing of the women and men” at prayer in tribal ceremonies. One commentator says Merton acknowledged pre-colonial Mayan tradition as “a logo of the paradise that’s attainable for all.”

In his remaining 12 months, 1968, Merton wrote a significant poem known as The Geography of Lograire and gives these traces:

Redneck captains with whips
Fireplace of their fingers….
Friars behind each rock each tree
Doing enterprise
Bargaining for our souls
E book burners and hangmen.

Robust language to call the oppression that has gone on for hundreds of years towards indigenous peoples, usually within the title of faith.

Merton acknowledges how ceremony or ritual ought to join the human to the cosmos and the way it helps us transfer from an ego consciousness to a bigger consciousness, one would possibly say from self to Self.

For the Native Individuals, it brings about the notice of a community of relationships by which one had a spot within the mesh. One’s identification was the intersection of cords the place one ‘belonged.’ The intersection was to be sought by way of a sort of musical or aesthetic and scientific synchronicity. That is how “one fell in line with the dance of the universe, the liturgy of the celebrities.”

A way of belonging appears laborious to return by in our time, when a lot time is spent on computer systems and so little time in group or group celebration. We now have been sluggish to ritualize our connection to the huge universe being found in our time.

However that connecting, that “community of relationships” and sense of belonging with a “place within the mesh” is what wholesome ritual can and ought to supply. It connects us “right into a cosmic system which was without delay completely sacred and completely worldly.”

Such belonging is just not past our capability; it undergirds all group, which Pére Chenu defines as the search for the frequent good. We now have certainly felt this energy in our Cosmic Lots over the many years.

Ritual honors the community of relationships that enables society to occur and the “I” to turn into “We” and for “self” to graduate to “Self.” Union with the entire. Communion within the fullest sense of that time period. “Oneing,” to make use of Julian of Norwich’s phrase for mystical expertise.

Queries for Contemplation

Do you sense a lack of a way of belonging in right now’s world? Do you agree {that a} wholesome ritual is supposed to supply that sense of belonging? And that group and a quest for the frequent good are attainable? And that the brand new cosmology beckons rituals that collect folks to have a good time our magnificence and awe within the context of creation?
