Hopkins: “The Blessed Virgin In comparison with the Air We Breathe,” Half II

Yesterday we shared the primary a part of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem evaluating Mary to the air we breathe. Right here we share the second half with a short commentary on the poem. Hopkins, a 19th century Jesuit poet and mystic, is completely creation-centered as is clear on this poem.

Once more, look overhead
How air is azurèd;
O how! nay do however stand
The place you’ll be able to elevate your hand
Skywards: wealthy, wealthy it laps
Around the 4 fingergaps.
But such a sapphire—shot,
Charged, steepèd sky is not going to
Stain mild. Yea, mark you this:
It does no prejudice.
The glass—blue days are these
When each color glows,
Every form and shadow reveals.
Blue be it: this blue heaven
The seven or seven instances seven
Hued sunbeam will transmit
Excellent, not alter it.
Or if there does some smooth,
On issues aloof, aloft,
Bloom breathe, that one breath extra
Earth is the fairer for.
Whereas did air not make
This bathtub of blue and slake
His hearth, the solar would shake,
A blear and blinding ball
With blackness sure, and all
The thick stars spherical him roll
Flashing like flecks of coal,
Quartz—fret, or sparks of salt,
In dirty vasty vault.
So God was god of outdated:

A mom got here to mould
These limbs like ours that are
What should make our daystar
A lot dearer to mankind;
Whose glory naked would blind
Or much less would win man’s thoughts.
By means of her we may even see him
Made sweeter, not made dim,
And her hand leaves his mild
Sifted to go well with our sight.
Be thou then, O thou expensive
Mom, my ambiance;
My happier world, whereby
To wend and meet no sin;
Above me, spherical me lie
Fronting my ahead eye
With candy and scarless sky;
Stir in my ears, communicate there
Of God’s love, O stay air,
Of persistence, penance, prayer:
World—mothering air, air wild,
Wound with thee, in thee is led,
Fold residence, quick fold thy youngster.

Commentary: I’m struck by the vital position that “mothering” performs on this poem, a lot because it does within the teachings of Julian of Norwich who celebrates greater than another Western theologian as much as the late 20th century the divine female, connecting it to compassion.

Hopkins ends his poem with “World—mothering air, air wild/wound with thee, in thee is led, Fold residence, quick fold thy youngster.” Mary’s youngster is each Jesus and the remainder of us, different Christs clearly.

Mary is each mom and “my ambiance,” we breathe her out and in each day, a “happier world.” It’s by means of her that we see Christ and his mild higher and clearer and fewer dim.

Hopkins bathes the poem in a cosmic sense—his is a “Cosmic Mary” who’s a part of the ambiance and a “bathtub of blue and slake” and “blackness sure,” and “all of the thick stars spherical him roll/Flashing like flecks of coal.” Moreover, “this blue heaven” perfects mild and the “hued sunbeam” and “each shade glows.”

The air is “Wild air, world—mothering air, nestling me in every single place” carrying with it the mothering qualities of nearness and hominess and nestling.

There’s a “new Nazareth” and a “new Bethlehem” born in us as we too, as Meister Eckhart teaches, delivery the Christ like Mary did. There’s a roundness to our existence, as Hildegard additionally teaches when she says we’re “embraced by the arms of God.” Compassion, as Julian and Eckhart insist, is central to this holding. “I say that we’re wound/With mercy spherical and spherical/As if with air: the identical/Is Mary, extra by identify.”

And like Mary, we delivery “glory” or doxa, carrying on the divine exercise.

Queries for Contemplation

Do you acknowledge a “blinding glory” in your self and others and the more-than-human at instances? A doxa that’s godlike and radiates the sunshine of each the Cosmic Christ and the Cosmic Mary?
